Vice president candidate
Trixie Vida Wangari Munyambu
How has your experiences helped you prepare for this position and how will the SOCA community benefit from you serving in this capacity?
In my almost two years working as a SOCA executive, I have come to understand how the organization works and solidified my passion for its mission. While working in SOCA, I have gotten the chance to connect with members, speak to other executives, and network with members of SOCA. These experiences have given me the leadership ability and perspective necessary to serve as Vice President successfully. As a candidate, I will be focused on inviting membership into the process and having their preferences inform how the organization is run. I find it important that SOCA is a true ambassador for its members, and as executives we should work to cultivate an environment where everyone feels that they are safe and included. By maintaining open lines of communication and focusing on community-based initiatives, I will help SOCA expand its reach and impact, ultimately contributing to a more connected and united community.

If I am elected SOCA Vice President, my goal is to rebuild the community as a whole. SOCA was founded with a mission to support its members; however, over the last few years, the members have dwindled and participation in the organization has declined. To me, this trend can and must be reversed through engaging with the community, building a welcoming environment, and providing more opportunities to connect and contribute. Over the course of the semester, I will prioritize member inclusion in the decision-making process as their voices are the ones that should guide SOCA’s direction. Additionally, I want to table our advocacy efforts through partnerships with on-campus organizations and outside groups to highlight and uplift underrepresented communities. Additionally, I will work to make student opportunities more visible and create new initiatives that directly benefit our members. I am fully committed to dedicating 4-6 hours per week to this position, working closely with the executive team to bring SOCA back to being a thriving, member-focused space where every voice is heard.

How has your experiences helped you prepare for this position and how will the SOCA community benefit from you serving in this capacity?
I joined SOCA in August 2024 as a volunteer, and since then, I have had the privilege of becoming more deeply involved with our community. I’ve had the honor of MCing two major SOCA events, Cultural Night and the Black History Month Gala, where I connected with SOCA members, the current exec team, and newcomers celebrating with us. These opportunities allowed me to engage directly with our members, further strengthening my understanding of what it means to be part of SOCA. Additionally, my volunteer role has given me the chance to assist with organizational duties such as monitoring the SOCA space and supporting events like Catch Ah Vybz and the First and Second Year Social. These experiences have not only deepened my connection with SOCA but have also honed my skills in event coordination, marketing, communication, and community-building. All which I believe will be applicable to the role of Internal Relations Officer.
If you get elected, what are your plans for each semester and how are you committed to executing those plans in the position you are most interested in? What is your level of commitment to execute on those plans and do you have the time required? (eg. 4-6 hours per week on average)
As Internal Relations Officer, I will be a steadfast advocate for SOCA, making sure our voices are heard, our needs are prioritized, and our presence within SFSS remains strong. Through active participation in council and committee meetings, I will work to bridge the gap between SOCA and the SFSS, ensuring that decisions made at the council level reflect the needs of our community. I will also keep SOCA informed by providing clear, timely updates on council discussions that impact us. My primary goal is to ensure that SOCA’s interests are always at the forefront of decision-making within SFSS, fostering a collaborative environment where our community’s needs are not only acknowledged but actively addressed. This will involve advocating for SOCA in every discussion, securing necessary resources, and maintaining a consistent line of communication with the SFSS Council to ensure that our concerns are prioritized. Furthermore, I plan on dedicating 5 hours a week, or more if needed, to SOCA, ensuring that I am fully invested in advocating for our community and supporting its growth.

How has your experiences helped you prepare for this position and how will the SOCA community benefit from you serving in this capacity?
Volunteering for SOCA over the past year has showed me the importance of solidarity and representation across the African and Caribbean diaspora. Being a vocal advocate for the promotion of black expression and perpetual dismissal of African struggles while living in South Africa, where black people make up over 90% of the country while only constituting 16% of the middle class, I've seen its importance even more now while in Canada to show that African, Caribbean and Black people at large are multifaceted and multidimensional and do not conform to a singular image of timidity and poverty painted by the west. It is the passion that I see from the SOCA community that inspires me to give my time and effort in a bigger capacity than is possible to do in a volunteer role. It is that same passion that inspires me to do my part in honouring the legacy of the SOCA members who fought before us, and it is that same passion that inspires me to continue that legacy throughout my university career.

My plans for each semester would be to perform my tasks as secretary to the best of my ability should I be elected, wether that be through maintaining the records of the meetings, providing ideas to be implemented in the SOCA space and the community as a whole and to help in keeping the community informed overall.

This would be done by posting promotional posters, reels, and collaborating with other Black association to increase engagement. Additionally, focusing heavily on Black advocacy in Local Vancouver issues, as well as showing international solidarity with Black issues across the diaspora. Advocacy can include things such as fundraisers (example krispy creme) and awareness/discourse. For spring semester, I would want to focus on Black history month and showcasing the beautiful cultures that we have across the diaspora. Furthermore, creating awareness about Black History across the diaspora. Additionally, I would love for SOCA's Black History Month to collaborate with other Black Student Unions across universities to host large and memorable events(examples: afro beats party)In this role I would post infographics about important Black figures within history and our current community. As an East African Model United Nations Executive Committee member, I organized charity events, fundraisers, and a week-long conference for 2,000 attendees across Africa. Serving in student government for three years, including as Vice President, I revitalized our Sadie Hawkins dance with themed activities and live performances, achieving record attendance. These experiences equip me to excel as Events Coordinator. However, my biggest attribute is my dedication to continued improvement, seen in the sweeping changes I enacted as part of the EAMUN Exec (such as a new committee with tri-lingual debate, community service initiatives, and a brand-new curriculum). Should I become Events Coordinator, I pledge to never fall into complacency, bringing this same passion for innovation to the role.
If you get elected, what are your plans for each semester and how are you committed to executing those plans in the position you are most interested in? What is your level of commitment to execute on those plans and do you have the time required? (eg. 4-6 hours per week on average)
I plan to balance smaller-scale and larger events throughout the school year, ensuring both highly anticipated and casual after-class activities. I also intend to continue Catch Ah Vybez every term, as it remains a beloved event. In the summer, the events might be more intimate because less people are able to attend. I plan to keep up movie nights, but also to take advantage of the smaller groups and the good weather to host an outdoor movie night (perhaps with an afterparty). Since there tends to be less people in the summer, this would be a good time to collaborate with other clubs for a more inclusive experience. As in previous years, I would like to continue the retreat and summer barbeque. I am confident I will able to execute these plans due to my low workload in the summer. I anticipate having a little extra time during this term, so I would also love to work on some low-cost upscaling of the SOCA space. I adore thrifting, and I would find it so fulfilling to thrift some decor for the space and work on some DIY projects that can make it feel more homey. In the fall, new student outreach should be a key focus, supported by Catch Ah Vybez and the First & Second Year Social. As a crafty person, I’d love to organize beadwork sessions for waist beads, hair jewelry, and bracelets. I also want to continue the speakeasy event, a concept I loved last year. Afroween is always a staple, and I plan to enhance it with higher stakes costume contests and giveaways. Additionally, I’d like to integrate Advocacy Month into the SOCA schedule, as November tends to be slower for events. Lastly, I want to revamp Cultural Night to encourage more diverse performances and incorporate different forms of media for a richer experience (e.g. fashion shows, interactive storytelling, traditional dances and tricks). I am prepared to dedicate 4-6 hours a week in ensuring all these things go well. Spring Term will likely be busiest at the start and middle, as March brings finals and graduation stress. I’d love to introduce more nightlife events, including a Mardi Gras celebration after the break, since SOCA events rarely highlight French Caribbean culture despite a strong student presence. I also want to expand the BHM flea market while keeping the successful format of assigning exec members to specific events. Lastly, we could build excitement around the AFCON final, making it a fun yet low-budget event. Some of these ideas are ambitious, but with the Exec’s support, I’m confident they’re achievable, and I’m ready to put in the work.

How has your experiences helped you prepare for this position and how will the SOCA community benefit from you serving in this capacity?
As SOCA’s events coordinator for the previous academic year, I have experience working with the executive team and organizing and running events. I have created new and diverse social affairs that make SOCA more exciting and engaging (i.e. Open Mic Night) while also incorporating fresh ideas to SOCA’s recurring events (such as Karaoke at Catch Ah Vybz).
If you get elected, what are your plans for each semester and how are you committed to executing those plans in the position you are most interested in? What is your level of commitment to execute on those plans and do you have the time required? (eg. 4-6 hours per week on average)
I plan to dedicate 4 hours a week to SOCA and ensure fresh ideas are being encouraged and generated for events for the community. I plan to diversify SOCA’s reoccurring events while also creating new experiences for members. Some event ideas include - Summer Beach Barbecue Party, Outdoor Open Mic Night, Cinema Movie Nights, SOCA Meme Party and many, many more!! If you enjoyed the SOCA events of 2024-25, I have many more ideas to share :)
