OPEN SURVEY RESULTS SPRING 2021
*All voters (51 respondents) are added for the survey who would've been ineligible for the Executive Positions (did not sign up to be members by the snapshot date or is an alumni member) but who are still SOCA members
What would you like to see SOCA do over the next year 2022/2023:
- More events for the black community at SFU to meet each other and or black centered celebrations and just events in general- both on and off campus + more in events in person for instance:-
- Catch a vibe events and hangouts on Tuesday/ Thursday
- Wholesome Afro- beat dance parties
- Events centered around Black womanhood
- Book clubs
- Community building
- Awareness projects
- A plus is ensuring the events are safe
- More socials- events and activities including sporting activities
- Continued but also increased active advocacy and solidarity for Black lives on campus [in SFU and SFSS]
- Re-establish the Black caucus space.
- More collaborations with the ALAS, NSA, SSA, many other groups on campus and Black student unions in Canada
- More active communication regarding updates about events, SOCA meetings (have links available on website and social media)
- More services for for black students with increased funding
- Spend the levy $65,000 funding!
How can SOCA advocate for you better?
- I feel like SOCA does a great job at advocating for POC especially when they surveyed the school about the issues and needs of Black and Indigenous individuals.
- More engagement in SFU decision making
- Reinventing the NSA
- By strengthening relationships with other community groups so we can have each other’s backs
- By constantly seeking members' input and opinions
- Ensuring students are represented and are involved in governing SFU Black Caucus
- Get permanent health and counseling for Black students and also multiple Black counselors available;
- Get funding for off campus mental health services like UBC's Mental Wellness Pilot Project for Black Students, Faculty and Staff
Any additional comments on the above question?
- “Unity not division”
- I personally don’t think SFU takes racism as seriously as it should-additional comments to: Do you feel as if SFU is equipped to handle anti-Black racism in the classroom or on SFU campus?
- SFU still doesn't collect race based data like they promised they would, and still don't have a reporting mechanism and accountability/support process in place for racial discrimination. general 'anti-bullying' approaches don't work to address systemic racism. The best support for anti-Black racism currently is SOCA and Black community members doing the best we can to support each other emotionally or through existing mental health supports, reporting or legal processes.

The following are the candidates who ran for SOCA ELECTIONS 2022/23!
PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES
Sophonie Priebe
How has your experiences helped you prepare for this position and how will the SOCA community benefit from you serving in this capacity?
I have been actively supporting SOCA and Black students at SFU since 2021 in various capacities and have the practical skills to coordinate SOCA’s functions as the President. As the Previous Acting-External Officer and current Vice President, I organized SOCA events and regularly recruited Black students I interacted with. I am one of the SOCA execs and activists that successfully mobilized students for the Hiring of Black Faculty and Black student scholarships at SFU Senate. I was a panelist at SOCA’s ‘Critical Intersections of Blackness and Global Solidarity’ Virtual Panel Discussion. I advocated for and helped run a referendum campaign in partnership with SFU DNA and FNMISA to increase long-term funding for Black, disabled, and neurodivergent students at SFU. I am excited to continue to bring Black students and allies together, and look forward to establishing a joyful and supportive environment for Black students at SFU and FIC.

VICE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES
Emmanuel Adegboyega
How has your experiences helped you prepare for this position and how will the SOCA community benefit from you serving in this capacity?
For the past few years of my life, I have been heavily involved with advocacy work for the black community. From a very young age, my leadership skills has been one of the main things that distinguished me from my peers. I went on to graduate elementary school as valedictorian. Then upon entering high school I join the student council and after just two years of serving as a grade rep, I went on to become the president of my school for two consecutive years and then also graduated high school as valedictorian. During my four years in high school was when I co-founded a Black History Month Committee with an objective to dismantle racism and educate people on Black history. I then went on to working with my school board and going on several media platforms sharing my experience with police brutality and the importance of a society free of violence, hate, and discrimination. With these experiences of mine amongst many others, I believe I’ve been prepared to take on this role at SOCA. With my profound experience with the black community, I believe the SOCA community would benefit from my leadership, knowledge, and the ideas I bring to the table.

As current IRO, I feel like I am well equipped to be reelected, considering the amount of work and information this role consists of, it may be labour inducing to get acquainted with the responsibilities which is something that I am confident in carrying out once again. I am also a part of many other groups and have lots of experience with internal work around SFU and in my career. I am director of Marketing for Women in Engineering at SFU and I host a podcast with Surge SFU, so these experience reinforce my dedication to not only SOCA but the SFU community at large. I supported the CMNSU (Communications Student Union) in 2020 in internal communications as well.

If I were elected, my plan for each semester is definitely more focused on the members and supporting with the mental health and mental capacity of our membership. I found that in my role last year there was a lot of time spent learning the systems of sfss and different etiquette regarding student advocacy and council meetings that I didnt get as much time as I wanted to support internally from the microcosm of individual members in SOCA, rather than representing SOCA internally within meetings. I hope to do semester check-ins with our group and set up zoom calls or coffee chats to really get a sense of our community and hear people internally from a one on one. That's something we lack in SOCA currently and not many are comfortable speaking out in our general meetings, nor does our community feel mobilized enough to speak out. I am very interpersonal and love to create relationships with others, so I hope to dedicate more time this semester to be that resource for others internally as well as represent and fulfill my duties in council. Hours of commitment tentatively look like 3-5/week, excluding the 4+ hours of bi-weekly council meetings.

This year as president, I oversaw the transition into our space in the Student Union Building, and have fostered a warm environment that other students can also call their home on campus. I’ve organized a wide variety of events like games and movie nights, panel discussions, cultural nights, collaborative events with other student groups, and more. I’ve successfully advocated alongside community members over the years and achieved some Black advocacy milestones in areas such as campus safety and anti-racism. I led the team and collaborated with DNA and FNMISA to run the 2022 SFSS referendum campaign to establish sustainable funds for Black, Indigenous, and disabled student groups on campus. It was a success! We secured a $65, 000 fund for SOCA to carry out operations and provide events, advocacy, and services to Black students at SFU. This year, we have pressured and worked with the University to hire 15+ Black faculty as well as establish an Black Student Office delivered through SFU Student Services, both set to occur in the 2022-23 academic year!

If you get elected, what are your plans for each semester and how are you committed to executing those plans in the position you are most interested in? What is your level of commitment to execute on those plans and do you have the time required? (eg. 3-5 hours per week on average):
I am running for At-Large Representative because I believe my strengths and capacity align best with the flexibility that this role offers. SOCA quickly became my home at SFU in 2018, when the president at that time approached me with a flier for an upcoming social event! I am passionate about creating space for Black joy to thrive, and I will continue doing work in creating space for the community to connect. I will also continue advocating for students through an intersectional and equitable framework. I intend to support SOCA team and membership by applying my knowledge to: - Host fun and educational events in collaboration with student groups at SFU and external Black Student Unions in Canada - Provide consultation on the development of the SFU Black Student Office 2022 - Ensure that the current SFU Black Health & Counseling supports available are made permanent - Support governance and operations of SOCA

I have a plan to set a couple of sporting games or just exercises to help bring people together and communicate, I also have another idea on like a little gathering where people can come and share ideas or get help with issues and it is a place where people can meet like minded people. I am very committed to execute this plan and I can give in 6-8 hours a week to these plans.

How has your experiences helped you prepare for this position and how will the SOCA community benefit from you serving in this capacity?
I would love to be the SOCA first year rep as during my first semester, I have already connected with many other individuals and first years within SOCA and have brought them together with fun events such as the first year social. I believe the SOCA community will benefit me being an executive as I will continue to help prepare welcoming events and providing support to students with open arms.

If elected, I plan to help students mingle within SOCA events and help more first year black students be informed about SOCA. In addition, I would love to help with Black study hall, movie nights and more. SOCA means a lot to me which is why I would commit as much of my time to the club as possible.
