The Executive Team (2019/20) is bound by the Constitution of the SFU Somali Students Association. The Executive is held accountable for the overarching functions of SSA while the volunteers keep us effectively running.

PRESIDENT -  ​​Osob Mahdi ​

Name: Osob Mahdi 

Position: President

I’m currently a Health Science & Sociology student. My favourite Somali phrase is a dua in somali i heard often growing up: “ilahay ha ka diga qof diintatha iyo dalkaga iyo dadkaga anfaco” and my goal is for SSA to become the catalyst in achieving this. My hope for this 2020/2021 school year and beyond is for SSA to have a positive impact in the wellbeing of our members and greater community, through  the creation of safe spaces and community initiatives.

vice president -  ​​Khalid Ali

Position: Vice President

Hey, I’m a third year Kinesiology student at SFU. I’ve always been really into sports and enjoyed studying anatomy and physiology so becoming a physiotherapist seemed like the natural route and that’s what I/m currently working towards insha allah. I’m involved with the SSA because I want to be a part of bringing all the Somali youth across the Lower Mainland together. I want to help provide a space for youth to come together to learn, grow and be heard. My favorite food is baasto.

secretary - Mahado Hassan ​

I am in my 2nd year here at sfu in the Bio-Chem program. I am this year’s SSA secretary and my aim is to help contribute in making the Vancouver  Somali community more united and tackling some problems that we face. A Somali saying that I live by is “dhexda xiiro naag nool iskadhig”​

Events Coordinator  - Taqwa Ali

My name is Taqwa Ali and I am a student in the Teacher Education Program at SFU. I joined SSA (as event coordinator) to connect with and engage Somali students on and off campus, and to do my part in strengthening the Somali community in the lower mainland.

Social Media Coordinator - Asmaa Awad

Name: Asmaa Awad
Position: Social Media Coordinator

I'm a Fourth Year Education student with minors in Learning and developmental disabilities and social justice. My favourite Somali foods are malawax, burr, and sambusa. I joined the SSA in hopes of increasing Somali student engagement on campus and wanted to be a part of creating a safe space on campus for Somali students to build connections, network, and have fun. I'm social distancing this month by interacting with friends via video calls/online group games, and binge-watching my favourite shows and movies.

Treasurer - Suleiman Issack

First Year Rep- Abraham Afrah

I’m a 3rd year Criminology student at SFU. I’m the First Year Rep within the SSA, and my goal is to recruit new members, and be the face that potential members can reach out to.​

Exec at large - Asha Issa

Name: Asha Issa
Position: Exec At Large

I’m a future educator and love working with kids! My favourite Somali quote that I heard growing up is: nin aan shaqesaniin shax macabo. It’s a reminder that in order to enjoy the good things in life, you have to put in work and effort! A goal of mine for SSA is to build stronger community ties and to provide a safe space for Somali youth, where they are heard and their voice matters. During this quarantine I spend my days thinking about food while eating.​

I am currently in my final year studying Kinesiology. I am truly excited to be a part of a team dedicated to the success of Somalis and Somali youth here in the Lower Mainland. You can catch me somewhere on campus munchin on some suqaar and malawax 😁.​
