Background
We are in Canada either as descendants of slaves, immigrants, or international students. Irrespective of our status, we are connected by our African identity. There are times we find ourselves trapped, frustrated, or just needing a shoulder to lean on or an ear to listen to us. The SFSS Black Students Support Centre recognizes this challenge however, it acknowledges the presence of the Black community in British Columbia. Providing support in the form of integrating students into the Black community becomes eminent.
In African traditional societies, elders are recognized as the embodiment of knowledge, wisdom, dignified, and powerful members of society. They are deemed as the transmitters of culture and traditions from their generation to the younger generation. It becomes apparent to connect our students to the elders of our society to serve as guardians. The program will offer an opportunity to learn, network and keep students motivated throughout their stay on campus and life after school. Additionally, it will provide the platform for inter-generational bonding. The Black Student Support Centre is therefore pleased to introduce “A Walk with Our Elders”. Three different services under this program:
- One-on-One with an Elder: The Centre will host resident Black Elders annually (subject to renewal). Here students will be paired with a Black elder on a need basis.
- Generations Connect: Through seminars and active learning programs by the Centre, students will get the opportunity to interact with Black elders on different topical issues of interest to our community.
- Life-long Learner: Elders to mentor interested students (this will be career-oriented).
We are therefore calling on all mid-career professionals, entrepreneurs, senior management of Caribbean and Africa descent interested in coaching young Africans in post-secondary institutions to apply to be a part of our "Walk with Our Elders Program."
